Do not let the piston gap scare you. When measuring pistons to fit them to the bore they are measured near the bottom of their skirt. I forget whether the measurement is taken perpendicular or parallel to the wrist pin. Regardless, the piston IS smaller at the top so don't be too alarmed.

Ok thanks very much yet again probably the head gasket. Would this explain the smoke coming from the push rod holes?? This was fuel smoke which lead me to doubt the pistons however looking at other threads it looks like the gap on mine is fine this block will give me more grey hairs ahhhh...

Your best bet is to put the head back on and perform a compression and/or leak-down test if you want to determine the condition of the rings without taking the engine completely apart.
