Does anyone know the law as to whether a 3rd brake light can have within its lens (or spells out) the word "STOP"? Would this be legal in the UK?

I quite like the idea of having something like this as a third brake light on the rear parcel shelf, but I'm not sure if it's legal: http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1423.l2649

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Hi

I asked the local MOT guy about a oblong third brake light with 'stop' written on it when I had my car MOT'd, and he couldn't say for sure but thought from memory the 'stop' can't be visible when the light is off, only when illuminated.

You could either look up the MOT manual online or simply ask a local MOT garage to be sure.

From what i can gather a 3rd brake light on older cars is not a requirement.

The other two obviously do but it worth checking on. Have a look at this

It may pay you to have a trip to your local MOT garage and ask them.

Not a requirement if the car didn't have one when it came out of the showroom, but I know from experience having a word in your top/3rd brake light is usually an advisory - my friend has the words 'BACK OFF' in his and just takes the advisory every year!

My father had a 1939 Vauxhall 10 with a single brakelight on the end of a pod at the back which said STOP when lit up.

You heard it here first.

Whilst not needed, a 3rd brake light is essential for a mini, who's lights are very low to the ground and often not visible to drivers who come 'up close and personal'!
