[stretch tech]

hi all, i thought i may as well start a separate thread here for the entertainment side of my thirty restoration

so here is the car as it stands now (bar spot lights) nearly ready to go on the road after i refit the interior





this is what i have to put in the car, JBL power component speakers





two 5.25 inch speakers





two 6.5 inch speakers





and this is my head unit which has a usb connector



so after many hours of head scratching, i decided to put all four under the rear bench...now before you all throw things at me, let me explain. i know this setup won't give optimum quality, i'd rather keep them tucked neatly away rather than take up space on the dash etc as my aim was to keep the car as standard looking as possible

so i made a cardboard template as i didn't want to buy something that i could make cheaper



then i cut out the speaker holes and made it again in 10mm ply wood



test fitted speakers



and covers



before the respray, i covered the cabin in sound deadening



including under the rear bench



then i fitted the rear carpet, wired them all up and fitted the board to the bench after sound deadening under the bench



i will get a roll of carpet this week and wrap the board and then refit the whole interior

they sound really good and i will try and get a video up as on a third volume, i couldn't here anything any one else was saying...perfect

so what do you all think ?

hi all, quick question(s), should i put some wool or that fluff stuff (i'm new to this so excuse the very technical phrases ) behind the board ? will it make a noticeable difference ? and what is best to use ?

In my opinion, I would pack the area behind the speaker with "fluf" wool etc. As this would stop the sound radiating of the metal base of the seat creating a tinny sound.

Less is more.
One set of components or coaxial in front and sub somewhere is all you need in a mini...

Those speakers you have at the moment are coaxial are they not?

Components would have the tweeter mounted elsewhere whereas coaxial have 'all the sound from the same cone/place'

You are talking about acoustic wadding or damping material.

It helps stopping standing waves which form when sound waves reflect back off the enclosure's panels... BUT i would first ensure that all the panels are sound deaned as much as possible and the front panel is mounted as solid as possible.

The problem with your set up is you have 2 different sets of speakers in the same air space. As the speakers are different they will be doing slightly different things (movement) but as they are in the same air space they will be effecting each other... which is not good. Plus they are Stereo so you will have 4 different movements going on in the same air space..!

Take a set out and put them up front... IMO.

ok then buddy, i'm cheap so will cotton wool do or do i need proper stuff ?

Less is more.
One set of components or coaxial in front and sub somewhere is all you need in a mini...

i would love a sub but i'm a skint 17 year old student so all funds now are going toward insurance the only reason i have this ICE stuff in the first place is because my uncle gave them me for free

i have already put some sound deadening mat stuff down under the rear bench but i do have a little bit left, should i put that down aswell ?

ok i didn't realise that the interference of the back waves would make a difference should i separate it off into four individual boxes with some more ply wood ?

i know that would give optimum quality but i want to keep the factory look as much as possible so this seems the best compromise to me

hi all, i've recut another speaker board as the other one had split when i went back to it the other day i also have got a roll of black carpet to wrap the board in so i'll do that this weekend

hi all, managed to wrap my newly cut speaker board today









i also wired all the speakers back up and refitted the board (forgot to take a pic) but i found that my two middle 5.25" speakers aren't working, a quick diagnostic later and i found that they both have power to them but the negatives are both broken somewhere i suppose that's what i get for buying cheap off of ebay (the other pair of speakers came with some proper automotive wire and they work fine)
