There are enough websites about to help you with how to get going with building a turbo; the rest is just reading/searching/reading....more searching on TM forum. That there is a bible in itself that no book can hold.
I think there is enough evidence in this thread to satisfy the majority of Davids questions that he keeps popping up with. However i have one of my own and its about this mysterious road weight blue clubman that ran a 12 built by your daughter using only your book. Is this pub talk or is there proof as i've read it a few times on your threads on P/H that you claim but never anything to back it up with and im pretty sure they had camera or paper back then as that would be a time i would bloody frame!

The Don, which quite a few people know of is regularly under 13sec and even into 11's, alothough on slicks for the latter, Nic R on the turbo minis forum is into the 12's. I have a timing slip from avon somewhere agains paul w's n/a mini sprint which was low 13 sec.
If you search on youtube there are a quite a few vids of uk road legal cars running in the 12's and low low 13's. If some of us ran the hoosier 'US road legal' slicks we would be in the low 12's or 11's.
It seems to me that the tires we have now are way better than those that were available when my eldest daughter Samantha was running her mini. Using the slicks of the day she would drive around the water at the burnout area and do a dry third gear burnout. This would result in about 90 mph on the speedo with the car just moving forward slowly. That car was a full weight 1275 GT and would trip the lights right on 100 mph. She did tell me though that, if to0 rough with the clutch at the shift point, it would spin the wheels going into third and 4th to the point it took a few moments to subside. I wonder how much faster that car might have been on todays tires.
Have any of you out there experienced tires from 1986 to now to put some kind of value on the possible improvements?

I never actually saw Samatha's mini but a lot of folk at Avon raceway did. I sent Sam the manuscript so she had a copy about a year before the big A series book hit the news stands and book shops. I have no idea what color the car was because as I said I never saw it. I do know that in 1986 Dave Mountain, who at the time was the 'A' Series most successful race engine builder, made the comment that it was the fastest Mini, road or otherwise, that he had driven. It also set a new record as far as NA power at the wheels on his dyno.
At the time Samantha's 18 year old boy friend was Mike Parry. They used the book to build the engine between them (Sam had some experience building SB Chevy engines but not much but Mike had a lot of motorcycle building hours under his belt) Mike went on to start Race Techniques in Cheltenham and last year cleaned up the 'Miglia' championship by scoring 198 points out of a possible 200. I would hazard a guess (and since Mike is in the for-front of N/A 'A' Series building he may be able to verify this) that even today if all the technology applicable was applied to a N/A engine it would be competitive. but let me pose a question here - if I had not written that book who else would have done it - the factory???
No let me pose another question here. If I had been given any kind of support by the factory (BL) how far down the road do you think I would have got with turbo motors. No - instead of BL picking up what I had to offer it was Chrysler who put in the phone call. During my tenure with them I helped developed the Avenger (Heads, cams, exhaust and carburation) to the point they we strong enough to take 2 BTCC championships with a dominating performance. I also developed the Turbo Tiger Avenger that was due to go into production and at the last moment stymied by an oil crisis. That car was intended to compete with the Lotus Cortina Twin Cam. Well it would have chewed up a 'Twink' and blown it out like feathers with a 0-60 in 5.5 seconds and 100 in 17. Not to bad for what would have been production, low cost, 1974 emission legal saloon with a 1 year warranty on it.
Anyway, to answer you question here on the validity of reading the book and building the race winning motor - call Mike at Race Techniques then please tell the rest of the forum what the answer is. He was there - I am only the guy that supplied the manuscript!
As for my 'fan' like interest in Turbo Minis I have to say that it is tinged with just a little envy. I think I came along just too early in the game or turbo's just too late for me. I sure would like to make up for lost time and at least have a little in the way of a game plan to do so.
I will make it my next job to sign up for the Turbo mini forum so don't be surprised if you see me asking you guys the questions!!!

David in your colum (idle talk) that you did for auto performance you did a write up on sams mini and it even has a pic of her sitting on the bonnet in knee high leather boots lol
Yes - but I did not see the published article or take the pic. The closest I got to the car was about 5500 miles and even my telephoto lens is a little short to get a decent shot at that distance.
I really don't chase down articles I have written when the are published. It's water under the bridge so to speak. Also don't forget I have already read the article text two or three times at least!!!
Now I have a SILLY QUESTION!
I am just trying to sign up on the turbo mini forum and I cannot remember what turbo is on a Turbo Metro. Was it a Holset or Air-research or ??
Darn it getting old really sucks!

i'm sure it was a gold clubman, the reason that i remember is that i had an identical coloured (reynard metallic) clubman in the early 90's and i was driving through solihull, someone flagged me down and asked me if it was the ex david vizard car........he heard the roar of the weber first then saw the car.........i wish that it was that car......
