I will tell you what brings a smile to your face. It's when your innocent little mini with a big engine squares off at the lights against some...

...it doesn't really matter what you type on the end of that Mr V ;D

and Lord knows what else who thinks you are a joke

Classic mini has nothing to prove so nothing to lose at the lights, I like your thinking though :D and I pity the people out on the roads looking for an easy "kill" at the lights up against a mini...they never know what they could be up against!

105 in 13 seconds - all from a 998. Aren't turbo's wonderful.

Seriously though that Anton/Vizard 1600 was built in the early to mid 90's. The 13 seconds at 105 was on the road with a data acquisition system. I am sure that on sticky slicks on a fully prepped drag strip it would have run in the 12's.

Though 1600's are all well and good let's not overlook the inference here as to the potential a turbocharged A Series has. One day I might find the time to build one. I am sure I won't be disappointed. I hear that some of the fastest turbo Mini's are over the 300 hp at the wheels. Maybe that is enough to embarrass even a Chevy powered Cobra!!

Did autosprint do a 1600cc mini way way way back?

Of course a turbo. It's the only way to make the a series compete with modern engines. A 1600 A series is a clever engine, and has power too, but essentially the cost to build makes no sense other than as a novelty.

My 998 turbo is built to compete with 1380s with 16v heads or modern 16v cars. You only need to look at the terminals at hillclimbs to see what makes the most power. And yes sticky slicks help, but so does traction control!

to be fair, nowadays it has gone from the ole ( american :P ) saying, "there aint no substitute for cubes" to the clever forced induction.

dont think it is really fair to be comparing older ways of making an engine go faster to the more modern tech:P

I don't think a Turbo can exactly be considered modern technology really. They've been around for decades.

The Don, which quite a few people know of is regularly under 13sec and even into 11's, alothough on slicks for the latter, Nic R on the turbo minis forum is into the 12's. I have a timing slip from avon somewhere agains paul w's n/a mini sprint which was low 13 sec.

If you search on youtube there are a quite a few vids of uk road legal cars running in the 12's and low low 13's. If some of us ran the hoosier 'US road legal' slicks we would be in the low 12's or 11's.

Hehe I will take that challenge. The Cobra is hillborn injected, dry sumped, high compression Ls7 454 cuin race motor 650 hp and 1000 kg with sticky 315s I think it would have to be an amazing mini. Don't get me wrong, I love minis.

Ps the cobra should still out handle the healey!

I totaly Agree..I honestly expected to see a total miss match..I think the guy driving the Cobra was under instructions not to push into the corners..it was a bit damp on sunday and that cobra was worth a lot of money..just because of its history. and even more now that Mr Shelby has gone. (RIP)..

Oh! I should add that Dave Ross won the auto test in his fantastic 1967, 1275 Austin Cooper S.

How about the best of both worlds, a 1600 a series, with a big 'ol turbo bolted onto it, with a twink head. (ok, maybe best of all three worlds.)

Dv - i think you should come along and join TM, as you said yourself your abit out of the game with minis, we have alot if not all of the fastest minis are on there. The development, engineering and home made madness in which we do may help you abit or just give you some good reading, have a look at the rts clutches, siames efi 5ports, home brew k conversions, fiat head efi turbo engine and much much more.

As for the cobra, the don has proven 11 second 1/4 mile times and still can compeate in the road legal classes iirc low 12 sec in road spec not to mention goldie when its on the strip.
