Hiya,
Title pretty much says it all!!!
I know people have asked lots of similar questions before but I'm wondering if anybody has a genius plan to offer me! I'm flushing my cooling system and checking my thermostat. As I go to take the thermostat cover off, 2 of the bolts snap! They have snapped halfway down too, so there is no bolt pertruding! The bolts is snapped about a cm down!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi,
Its quite simple to do really. Go to halfords or somewhere and buy a stud extraction kit.
All you do is drill straight down into the top of the stud. The extractor has a reverse thread which you screw into the hole, and once its tight it will un-screw the stud.

Simlpes :proud:

And use copper grease on any nuts and bolt u replace. Then they are less lightly to be seized on next time you need to undo them.

Hope this helps!!!

Before using a stud extractor, soak the remaining stud in some penetrating oil for a while.

The stud extractors do work if your careful, but as they are hardened they are brittle and can snap easily. Leaving you with a piece of hardened extractor stud in the stud, making anything further very difficult!

I had to do this earlier (yesterday). Got a stud extractor kit from Machine Mart. Also heat around the stud and use penetrating fluid. Also don't rush drilling the stud. If you snap the drill bit you'll have the grind it out.

Be very wary of using stud extractors......very often they just snap off making the problem even worse. Just get the cover off any way you can - then get the remains out with stilsons on the remains of the studs. If they have broken off below the surface of the head (unlikely surely?) then start drilling with a very small bit at first - then slightly larger until the stud has gone - then run a tap down the threads. If necessary -go slightly larger, and open up the holes in the stat cover to suit.
Edit -hahahaha - crossed with post above ^^^^

Had this happen to me. Fortunately, the bolts snapped inside the housing, not inside the head. Penetrating oil, a bit of leverage and careful taps got the housing up and off the remains of the bolts. Then I used ordinary stud removers (like sockets, but with cams inside that grip the outside of the stud as you wind them around). The penetrating oil must have helped, but they came out easy.

I haven't had any problems with stud extractors so far. But I agree, whatever you do dont snap one off inside!!! :X

I've been lucky enough so far that no studs have sheered off! Touch wood!

Good luck getting it sorted :proud:
