thanks for all the advice guys, its appreciated. Think i'm just gonna have a go at removing a few of the lumps and bumps and smoothing out the chambers a little.
When it comes to sinking the valves into the head whats the furthest I could do it? I was planning on using a 266 cam in the engine and wasn't sure if i'd be able to sink the valves in to the head far enough.

And a big single carb is much better than the tiny twins........

The only single carbs I have are hs4's, I thought twin hs2's would be better? I have a set of twin hs4's i could use if they'd be better but I didn't think i'd really need them on a 998

Twin HS4 will be fine. The 266 only lifts slightly more than standard - I'm not going to guess the figure - you will need to measure it.

The 1960s Clive Trickey book, "Tuning a Mini" has whole chapters on where to file - and where not to file!

There are usually cheap copies available on Amazon if that helps.

Did my first 997 head with a template from Clive Trickey's book.

Bit off topic but if your doing your own porting then you should have a go at putting together a manometer to check your work. Interesting to see the improvements that are made especially at low valve lift.
