hi all, i was just looking around for possible engine conversions and i thought about the smart cars engine but after reading a topic on here about it, i soon found it isn't worth it because of the electronic gear change. i found that the largest engine in a smart car is in the forfour which is a cut down 3 cylinder version of the 4 cylinder engine in the A class. this is available in 1.4L 1.6L 1.7L 1.9L and 2.1L capacities and in natural aspiration or turbo charged versions with a 5 or 6 speed manual gear box. so i was thinking, is this a viable engine conversion ? i think it is mounted horizontally in the A class so would converting it to running vertically be a big issue or not ?

just thinking about future engine projects :proud:

ill be honest i think the oil will not flow properly if it was vertical also it would be too long & there would be issues with exhaust manifold & drive-shaft position

SA MINI - cheers mate, i've never worked on an A class before, i thought they were rear engined >_< thinking about it, it is quite a long engine, that would require one ma-hooosive bonnet bulge if it was mounted vertically  lol. i gather that's the 1.4L engine, what sort of power and torque do you get out of it ?

roughly 82-83 bhp very nippy for a 1400 8valve mpg is over 40 on motorway too.
i think the engine in the pic is the 1.6 petrol

all the engines are almost identical 1.4 petrol - 1.6 (bored out 1.4) 170 diesel - 190 diesel. 220 petrol turbo.
the engine was designed to shift under the car instead of on your lap when in a crash.

i don't think there's any chance of getting it in the front of a mini anyway the drive shafts actually come out of the gear box at the front just in the right corner of the picture.

get yourself a tape measure, andf get along to scrap yard. The only way its going to get done is to measure or try it
