hi all, just wandering if the turbo charger off the smart roadster turbo or present model smart fortwo turbo would be a viable turbo charger for the A series mini engine ? has anyone ever tried one ? the roadster has a 0.8L turbo engine and the fortwo now has a 1L turbo engine

just a thought for a future project :proud:

You'd need to find out the make and model of the turbo. Then look up the compressor map to ensure it can operate in the range required by the engine. Also you'd need to consider what the engine is used for, how much lag you'd want and how much boost.

In theory if you wanted to use it on a similar powered car then it will work. The problem with the Smart Car turbos is that the turbine and exhaust manifold are all one casting. so it;s pretty much impossible to use.

thinking about it.. a smart car has 3 cylinders, a mini engine has 3 exhaust ports. yes the turbo is built into the manifold but you could make up a 3 piece exhaust manifold from the head, taking it down 90 degrees from the head to attach to each port on the turbo, maybe a custom inlet manifold to tilt the carb to give a little extra room, its doable i reckon, thou i know nothing about the performance of the turbo and i dont know the dimensions for clearance.. but the fact its built into the manifold shouldn't be a problem..you might even be able to just make up a adaptor plate and bolt the turbo straight onto the head anyway :L

I'm sure you could make an adapter and even get over the fact that the turbine is on the weong side and it'd be a pain to get the exhaust where you need it, but the reality is as you say, what's the point. Lots of other suitable turbos available.
