My mate has got a 90's mini cooper that engages every gear and drives as normal with no noises. However even though he can easily engage reverse gear as normal, as soon as he gets going and starts to move in reverse there is an awful grinding noise almost sound like the wheels are hitting the sports pack arches but they're not. it sounds like metal grinding.
Has anyone experienced this sort of problem before what could it be? Thanks

it possibly could be a worn centre bearing in the gearbox as the reverse gear is the tallest gear in the gearbox and therefore puts more strain on the bearing when in use, either that or the reverse idler gear may have a chipped gear tooth, either way it will mean a gearbox strip down, grinding noises from the gearbox are never good news and its better to get it sorted sooner rather than later just incase the problem produces a lot of swarf which can get sucked up by the oil pump and cause engine damage which you really dont want to happen, its best to ask someone like guessworks for advice first though.
