as mentioned in another thread i have gone out and bought a perfectly good, fully working mobility scooter today. i had a quick go in it, let my mate up the road try it, the missis obviously had to have a go too (no one crashed it either)
then i took it into my garage and stripped it bare. shame really. never mind, im sure it really wanted to be play thing rather than a work horse.
to convert the steering to a conventional wheel i have had to completely re think the system. oroginally it had a bolt upright column which was easily adjustable for rake etc but the more you rake it back, the more it is like a tiller on a canal boat than a steering wheel. i carefully cut the steering head out of the chassis and tilted it right back. i then had to make a new column from some steel tube. now i just need to make a steering wheel.
tomorrows job is to add some mounting points to the chassis for my new body to bolt down to. i also need to begin making the frame that the new seat squab will sit on.
to keep it simple im making a very square steel body replicating the postman pat van!
i will add some pics very shortly!

here is the basic chassis, minus the batteries and obviously the controls.
(the mole grips are to give it temporary steering, and its on an old duvet so you can see it properly)
you can see the steering head at the front is the same as you would find on a pedal bike. i have already re raked it here and added the column

Why did you not get one uj and a couple of rose joints and make a column up? Would be very easy!
the steering head really was bot upright, in order to get it raked over enough to go under the bonnet it just wouldnt happen.
plus i couldnt get any rose joints or ujs on a saturday afternoon.
doing it this way was free and quick, just a few cuts and a few welds.

Wheels look like D1s
I ALWAYS look at these and think they look like D1's!

Theres a battery operated F1 childrens car in the garage which i'm going to attempt to fit over the chassis.
