Damsel in distress - have just relocated to Cornwall from London - driving down, the inidactors stopped working. They then returned for a brief period but are now definitely not functioning. Went to Halfords in Long Rock, where a very nice chap (who owns a mini and recommended this forum!) tried to resolve the problem. It is not the flasher unit (tried a new one of those), and he also checked the fuse box and the wiring, however to no avail. The hazard lights do however work, as do the other lights on the car. It's a 1995 Mini Cooper 1.3i (38,000 miles) - I'm clueless and the man at Halfords was also bemused. Is there anyone out there who can help? Any advice gratefully received.

Mine go all the time and it's always the fuse or the connections. Your fuse and fuse box may look fine but coul still be the problem! First check the fuse. If that's ok, check the connections going into that fuse. If there is any sign of corrosion, that will be it! Last time mine went I really couldn't find the problem. I put the keys in the ignition and turned one click, turned the indicator on. Then gave the connections a gentle wiggle around the correct fuse! Indicators flash on. Left connections on a position where indicators worked! Only a temporary fix but it's done the job for now! Ultimately, I need to replace some connections and possibly the fuse box. A fairly simple job..... When I have time!

Paulray
Often the fuse for indicators also protects the brake lights so a fault with the connections could mean that you are at risk of being rear-ended! Best to get this fault fixed ASAP.

THERE A FUSE, behind the carb, hidden in the wiring loom. Any problems with the indicators I find are because of these corrdoing or blowing. But I usually get no 4 ways and indicators that go slow!

hope this helps

there are two flasher units one for the indicators and one or the hazards

assuming you have no indicators the problem is on the common side - can you hear the flasher unit ticking when switched on? if not then check the fuse and wiring leading up to the flasher making sure none of the wires have fallen off. Also check the hazard switch on the switch panel as the indicator supply routes through that switch and if its faulty will isolate the indicators

Check if the brake and reversing lights work - they run off the same fuse as the indicators. If they are not working either then you know it's definitely a fuse problem. Probably dirty connections on the fuse box rather than the fuse being blown.

Gosh - I've never been on a forum like this and am a bit stunned by the replies - thank you people! I will get someone who knows more than me to actually poke around following your guidelines to see if your suggestions work. Thanks again!

I have a 1987 Mini,Indicators were working when I got the car then just stopped.Replaced both flasher units.Under bonnet, under dash and still nothing.Replaced indicator stalk and still nothing. It was driving me mad.checked fuses, all ok.So last resort asked an old boy who runs a Morgan repair garage near where I work. Its the flasher switch on the dash mate.Brought a new one today and I also put back the old stalk.Still nothing.Feeling low.So put back the new stalk.Yippee my indicators are now working. So I had two things not working,Flasher switch AND Indicator stalk. So what should one check first next time.Flasher switch. When is on in hazard mode it cuts power to indicators. When it off it feeds power to Indicators. Its a tenner for the switch,Stalk £36.So start there first it cheaper.Got a lot of new bits on the car now.And a few spares.Boy I needed that beer.
