hi !

we just put a deposit down on a 1990 mini checkmate racing green (think thats the model name - confusing) anyway... one of the things I noticed I wanted to sort out once i got it was the roof gutter trim.

the trim on the car at the moment is in a sorry state, hard brittle faded black plastic thats cracked in numerous places, it pulled away easy enough and the actual gutter it sound - but I dont want this trim on the car - there is even one bit thats been repaired using black carpet tape.

anyway - is it normal in the mini world to just remove this trim and leave it bare or does it really need that trim on there ?

also was pleased to see minispares sells an £8 roll of trim for this ,... well I was pleased till I realised that was for older minis and I needed the bizzarly priced £41 per side version ? is there any alternatives to this or will just ripping the old stuff off and tidying up the bare gutter be sufficient ?

ta in advance.

It serves no particular purpose except making the gutter look neat/go rusty. You can use the £8 stuff, but it's a pain to get on without kinking it.

as above, it's another rust trap. I personally think Minis look better without it...

I bought some of the cheap stuff from wood and Picket in the week and couldn't get it to fit to my satisfaction, bits wouldn't bed down properly etc.
Now in my garage hanging in a loop on a nail, the trim not me!
Best without I reckon.

I've got black trim from Mini Spares on my Sprite, No problem fitting it, it makes the gutter look neater and I haven't had any problems with rust in the last 4 years.

i bought a black trim from ebay, it arrived in a loop & would not stay on the car. i could get half on then it would just spring of the corners lol.
i found it easier placing the trim in a warm place for a couple of hours then fitting it as it was slightly more flexible.
personally i think minis look a lot better without the trim but i will be using a gutter clamp roof rack occasionally which fits tighter with the trim fitted

I had the chrome flexi trim, and to be frank, is was utter *******. However, I got some second hand genuine MPI trim at Bingley and it actually fits like it was designed to be there. It looks the part to in my oponion, but what do I know?

For what it's worth - I have some of the chrome stuff off a roll on mine and it fits perfectly well without kinking if you warm it up first. Also, we had some on the red City but took it off, on the Cooper it looks great with the white roof - bit too much on cars with all 1 body colour imo.
