The weak point in the guard Tupers has posted a pic of looks to be the bolts to me, they seem way too small in comparison to the size of the guard.

They do look a bit 'lacking'. Mine has 8 off 3/8" UNF bolts.
I always think aluminium ally is the way to go unless the rally will be on really rough forest roads like you get in Scotland, when a steel guard is best.

Cooperman - Point taken, I guess if the WRC don't use it then they must be no good. But GRP/Kevlar is still going to crack where as ali would deform before cracking. If i had the money I'd make one but as I dont do rally's it would only be for road use. A kevlar laminate copy of the RAC/ Scottish works type Mini spares sells would be ok for road use to stop dirt/stones/water getting up into the engine bay while giving some protection

The OP's link says it is 'Road Spec' (what ever that is) not full on Rally Spec so I guess it was never designed or intended to take massive hits from rocks & stones.

What I find a bit strange is that the ad says a 'Kevlar Only' guard can be made. However, Kevlar is hydroscopic (it absorbs water and delaminates) so that wouldn't last long. Kevlar must be enclosed in a carrier-lamination of GRP or CF to work properly. I don't know what the flexible outer lamination is with a Kevlar vest.
With the guard as advertised an oil cooler would be needed as the cooling loss looks to be great.
The Innocenti guard is good for road use as it lets lots of air through to the sump fins.

that gard completely covers the gear box

would that cause the gear oil to run hot ?

It would cause ALL the oil to run very hot. An oil cooler would be vital, as is the case with any sump guard on a car driven hard, and if you're not going to drive it hard there is no real need for a sump guard.
