Got a few around the lights and rear window/s..usual places.

Seen a few rust treatment kits (gel and primer) etc
but with the weather as it is, and lack of a garage to keep him in
is it best to wait for when it'll def. be dry for a few days? or get it done?

can it be treated and primed and left for a bit until i get hold of some paint? metallic brg if anyone has any they dont need/want!

Cheers!

depends on what you mean by rust bubbles,

you can get just a little bit if surface rust under there, which is easily attacked with a wire wheel and then etch primed, primered then painted

but you could also have rust holes, which obviously would have to be welded up.

have a poke around, see what the situation is with the rust, if there is solid metal under there, you should be able to tackle it all in one day, hopefully avoiding rain. but if there are holes, it will take longer as it will require more work to make good. So id leave that until a definite period of good days:)

speaking from experience. i used to have rust bubbles under the windows, i sanded the rust back, put some galvofroid rust preventative on then used a paint brush to dab it on. however you have metallic paint and i don't so im not sure if it will look as good if you did it. my advise is if its small enough use a paintbrush as a touched up patch looks better than a poorly sprayed patch, if you do have to spray though just research it and be very methodical.

the bits that im looking to get sorted first are the ones around the back window, the seals arent great so theres bits around the bottom of the window that are like cracked bubbles.

dad said something about filling them if need be. filling with....?

I'm assuming he means body filler, but unless the rust is completely removed this is not a good option, as the rust will come back, worse, as you wont be able to see it until it gets really bad.

stab them with a screw driver until they look ugly and then cut the rust out and weld in some fresh metal

personally, if im doing a job, id do it right. when the time is right( not going to rain, dont need the car for a few days) i would get the rear sreen out and get replacement seals. sand back the area around and on top of the rust bubbles, pretty much back to bare metal around the rust bubble, then asses. if it is just surface rust, then what im about to write should be a good guide to follow. if it has rusted a hole, you better crack the welder out ;)

i think the best tool for removing rust like this is with a knotted wire wheel that can be used on a grinder, these are really awesome bits of kit ( use goggles and thick welding gloves, when the wires come out or if it hits your hand, it hurts!!)

this will totally remove all rust and make it new metal. as your dad was saying, if its bad surface rust it will need filler. This is most commonly body filler, you can get it from halfords etc. this is becuase the rust can cause pits in the metal, and when painted, you would see them.

so, after going over the rust with the wire wheel, i would primer the are metal, then filler and smooth off untill good, then get a bodywork person to spray the repaired area, if it is hand painted it will look terrible as it is a metallic paint.

it may cost a bit to do ( bodywork wise) but with new seals and fresh metal and paint, it should not rust for a few years!

get some pictures of the rusty area up! please:)

nope, it didnt like that :)

but then i say that, it works in the quote bit :S

for the rear screen rust, i fear that there will be rust holes, the rust has gone from rust bubbles to rust volcanoe! meaning lots of rust, which then will mean rust holes :( get a screwdriver in there and poke around, try to see if there are any holes around. if there are and this is a daily car, as a temporary measure to stop water getting in cover the holes with tape ( tank tape, duck tape, carpet tape, whatever you want to call it! )

You can patch up and spray over it, but it will be back, I rubbed mine back to bare metal, treated the rust and re-painted it, all as described above.

A few months later it was back.
Cut out the rot and weld in new metal, which is what I have just had to do, these pics were taken last summer. I have now replaced the whole front end.

Best way forward ;D
