A recent mini owner and this being my first car, I'm gradually becoming more and more acquainted with the beautiful quirks of a classic car, but just a quick one, on my 1989 Rover Mini, I'm uncertain which way to pull the heater valve for hot air? i mean i've been fiddling and just can't seem to figure it out, I'm aware that the heater matrix may be blocked and/or need replacing, but just for peace of mind and for the future, I would really like to know what position in the valve should be pulled at for the hot air, whether it be out and turned? or just out, or in and turned etc etc etc. I really hope you can help, many thanks ;)

What car is yours?...if the valve is on top of the cylider head, with the control knob pushed in, the valve is open, allowing water to circulate through the heater matrix. Not sure about later bmodels though.

That's correct...with the control knob pushed in, the valve on top of the cylider head is open, allowing water to circulate through the heater matrix.

Is that not the other way round then?

For mine its push in for hot air (like you said as it circulates water) and pull out for cold, not sure why you would want cold air though!

Thanks for your input! But what model mini/year is yours, just really attempting to identify if anyone has the same model/year and see how it works for them :)

Possibly, i mean it seems so simply right? Just what way do you pull, but i've read many places now that during the mid80's-early90's it was altered, why?! Can't seem to find any definitive threads around anywhere neither giving precise answers so hopefully I'll draw others in with similar models tell me how theirs does,

Does anywho know where you can find the manuals online perhaps?

Didn't realise it varied mine is a 1993 rio you pull it out for hot air andpush it in for cold it does spin but that's irrelavant just how the pull knob sits.
It links to a pipe in engine bay at the top close to the bulkhead behind the thermostat will be some black tubing with a plastic and metal component halfway along this is the control valve the wire coming off it leads into the car to the pull knob.
That is if it's the same not sure how it varies between models should cover it in Haynes though hope that makes sense.
Removing the heater and cleaning it out is easier than it looks and the Haynes talks you through it :D

1987 998....valve fixed on cylinder head..control knob pushed in = heater on. control knob pulled out = heater off. It does not make it 'cold', just stops water flowing into the heater.
On later models with the valve in the hose it looks like it's opposite.

>DanFuke..my mistake in the previous post, I tried to edit it but failed.

By the looks of the heater control you have the type were it is pull out for heat and push in for cold. The easiest way to tell which system you have is to look at the cylinder head on the left as you look at the car.

If it is like this with what looks like a blanked hole the it is pull for heat

If it is like this, with a valve on the head, then it is push for heat

The either your cable has snapped or your valve is faulty.
