There is nothing in common between the live feeds to the brake lights and tail lights, so it is likely to be the only common thing, the main earth connection at the rear, several black wires, connected to the boot floor. I think that in most cases the black wires from the light units join at a bullet connector under the fuel tank, and a single wire goes to earth, but when you find the wires in the boot it will be obvious.
It is preferable to fix it properly and remove the possibility of a single point complete failure by giving each light cluster its own earth instead of one between the two. I don't know what BL were thinking of to wire them that way.

As for oil warning lights, the switches are notoriously unreliable, but I would never drive without one for any distance. I had one fail at about 5000 miles on a new City E. I would always have a gauge too.

Cheers for your help guys I fixed it all.
I think the left light surged and exploded. Blowing the fuse and hthe right hand side had popped out somehow.
