Hi,

Running a 1293 with HIF44, bought a new throttle cable as the old one is sticking at the top, as you push down, but not on the return. Should you hang it up and drip oil down the cable? Also, I have already put two cables on the car in the last year and a half - too many in my opinion. I am careful how I route the cable, with no tight bends etc, but it always seems to happen again (sticking on initial press). Removing the old cable and inspecting shows a near perfect cable, with no fraying etc, but the only "fix" is to fit a brand new one. Am I doing something wrong?

Ryan

If it is not the earth, which does seriously cook the cable, try some teflon bicycle grease, available from Halfords, or a different brand of cable (if possible).

Ah, I am aware of this problem, but never put two and two together... thank you. The earth does look "past its best...", and then while doing the earht cable, the top steady bushes could do with replacing. Funny how jobs seem to escalate. Thanks for the info.

Ryan.

Before mounting the cable I always take out the inner cable, rub it full of vaseline, and then stick it back in. Works like a charm

And in the car, make sure the cable is not catching on the fitting that passes it through the firewall.

I will take a look when fiting the new cable tomorrow. Thanks Doug, helpful on this and on many of my other questions. Top bloke. If you come to Fishtoft, Boston, Lincs, UK... there's a pint waiting for you.

Quick update; Throttle cable fitted, then looked at the earth strap - there was none!! I had what i thought to be an "additional" earth strap fron alternator to front panel, but it turns out this was my only one. New steady bushes and earth strap now installed. The engine doesn't move at all when i pull on it like it did before, and the new earth strap will hopefully mean the throttle cable has a longer life.

thanks again all.
Ryan.
