3.44 fd refers to final drive off the diff (the end cog if you like) that transfers power to the wheels this can be changed depending on what you want to use your car for.

Thanks, shame it wasnt a 1275 but at least i know what to look for while out hunting.. sorry for the daft questions but i have to admit to being thrown in the deep end by my son on this one.. I know nothing about minis at all so its a crash course on everything at the moment..

Its a nice engine to drive, bags of torque, but wont rev at all.
really??.............i think that you will find that a 1098 will rev as much as you want it too, if you read keith calvers article on tuning the small bore engines then you will see that the 1098 engine that he tuned was revving to 7000rpm and produced over 85bhp, this myth about the 1098 engines not revving is a load of rubbish, my 1098 fast road engine (with ported 295 head and kent 266 cam) will pull 6000rpm in 4th gear......i lay off the throttle after that as there is no point in revving it any higher but it would if i wanted it too......

i agree with the above, if its all bolted together properly there's no reason why the 1098 wont rev, dad told me years ago he built a 1098, 731 cam, 295 head with a 28/36 webber, lcb etc with a 3.44 diff and it went very very well, he reckons he could light up the front tyre in the first 3 gears and the mid range pull was better than most 1275s

i think that the main reason that mine will rev out in top gear is because it has a 3.44:1 diff with 1.04:1 straight cut drop gears which equates to a final drive of 3.59:1, according to guessworks website that means that it would be doing 95mph@6000rpm in top gear, but it accellerates like a b*s*ard.............i wonder how it will do at santa pod?
