this is a very silly question, I'm having a seriously blonde day today, but I can't for the life of me work out how to get the wheel nuts off...
I'm guessing the bit that you use to tighten loosen the jack with is what is used to remove them, but they seem to have some sort of thin caps over the top of them, it seems that the jack tool fits over but when I turn I seem to be just turning these caps on whatevers underneath...
I'm prob. gonna need to prize em off with a screwdriver aren't I?...

yes or pliers.
on my old minilites, some would come off, others were buggered so you could just stick a socket over the top.

i just stick the socket over all the caps except for the special nut which needs the special socket

That's it - if one of the nuts is a 'locking' nut - you will need the special key to undo that one. The others - remove the fancy caps to reveal standard hex bolt heads below. Get a proper socket and T bar to undo these - and carry it in the car at all times. Don't rely on the wheel brace.

The chrome caps on Rover wheel nuts are not usually to be removed. With the cap on the nut is the correct size to fit the tools, with it removed the nut is smaller and of no particular size either metric or imperial. The problem is that corrosion inside swells them and then the tools have to be forced on. When they get to this point, especially if you do have to remove the chrome caps to be able to undo them, the nuts should be replaced. If the cap is loose and just spins then it probably is the locking nut you are dealing with, it needs a key for removal as mentioned above and in this case you do prise off the cover.

Your's is not a silly question. It is genuinely confusing. The covers should stay on. To get the nuts off you will need a 11/16" AF six-sided (as opposed to 12 point) socket, preferably 1/2" drive with a breaker bar. A metric alternative is not really suitable. They damage easily and it is best to replace any that are difficult or damaged.
The exception is the locking nut where the cover needs to come off first. I bought the special tool at Minispares as the original was broken but I cannot find the reference.
