Can someone please explain the differences between the two....other than the obvious difference in year >_<

These two for example:-

http://www.howardwis..._mini_cooper_s/

I'm starting down the geeky path of Mk1's and 2's now :shy:

Appart from the obvious external changes, the interiors on the Mk2 are plain black, indicator switch is different, speedo is different (130mph instead of 120 or 125), binnicle mounting is different.

I recommend you get a copy of this book, it's what most people use to restore their Coopers to factory spec.

So do later Mk1s, I think they came into production around 1965.

Just on the exterior you can see that the corner bars were dropped, the door handles changed, there is a small stump on the door at the leading end of the door handle, as mentioned above the rear window is bigger, the lights are bigger (the reason the corner bars were deleted). The badging is different and the biggest change is the grille.
I've also just remembered that the horn is also operated from the stalk on the Mk2, the Mk1 has a centre push on the wheel, thus the Mk2 steering wheel is different as the centre is just a push fit, and not held in with a screw. Later Mk2s have a plastic cased heater. Not sure when the rear view mirror changed to the grey plastic one.
Also there are a lot of changes between the first and last Mk1s, which are covered in John Parnells book.

PS The two Tartan red cars above are 998 Coopers and not S's and the F reg Mk2 should have over riders on the bumper, just like the green Mk2 S has on the front.

Body wise they are the same, but the S has the 7.5" discs and a servo, 998 (and 997) had 7" discs and no servo. S had standard twin tanks from 1965 (option before then and I think and option on the 998). 998s had the same 3.5x10" wheels and hub caps as the Super Delux and Delux models, the S had a different design of 3.5x10" wheel (4.5" was an option) with a different offset because the 7.5" discs and hubs.
998 speedos only go upto 105mph, S speedos were 120-130 depending on year.

Seeing as both these cars Mk1 and a Mk2 are local'ish to us and open on a Sunday we're off to have a look today. Our classic car guru's who take care of Max dont like this spot, in their opinion they DONT RESTORE THEM they over restore and just churn them out as quickly as they can and replace panels/shells/engines willy nilly!

Thought it would be good to compare the differences though ...1964 Mk1 and a 1969 Mk2

Personally I'd take the MK2 Cooper. It's a bit more original because of the original engine and gearbox etc and I just really like mk2 Coopers and "S"s

Saying that, I don't like the dash or the extra lamps, I'd just have 2 driving lamps. Also being a B reg is a bit odd, do you know anything about that?
Also, it is considerably more of your money haha

Been to look will add some pics we took later.

Yeah agreed the MK2 was more original although Ive never seen that dash before it actually looked quite good but I presume was added and a push button start which I didnt know they had  ??

The story with that one is its pretty original or at least this spot hasnt done alot with it, all commission plates, engine numbers, glass, all match up with the car...I liked it but its a MK2 >_<

The story behind the Mk1 is the last owner found it in 2002 in a bad state and with the wrong engine in it, they had her restored inside and out, sourced the right engine/interior and had her rebuilt. The shell itself is original minus a few panels but the rest is added

Neither have a lot of history to them, although the MK1's restoration is documented and photo'd

Velly Interrrresting!
