Just wondered how many people (like me) have left their splash guard off and whether these should be fitted?

Took the mini out the other day for the first time in heavy rain and it was running like a *******.

Guess I have answered my own question but wondered how many people have left it off and whether it does make a difference?

i have one fitted to mine, and never have problems even in the very heavy rain, or driving through puddles.

The best advice is not to remove it, but if you do then smearing vaseline around the bottom of the dizzy cap and/or placing a marrigold/rubberglove over the top of the dizzy, will help help to keep water out. The later type electronic dizzys didn't suffer as as badly from water ingress either, so you have one of those then you're more likely to get away with removing the weather shield.

Cheers for replies guys.
My dizzy isnt the electronic type so it looks like I better refit the guard.
Just need to find the brackets!

I removed it when I did the engine overhaul. Thought engine looked so nice would leave it off :)

I never use one, even on rally cars. I just coat the distributor cap with silicone grease and then spray with ignition sealer and never have a problem, even when driving through deep fords or on wet & muddy forest tracks. Went to Hunstanton today in the p*****g rain and had no problems at all.

I have used an aircraft control cable grease called 'Aeroshell'. However, a good friend of mine just uses Vaseline and that seems to work well. After applying liberally just spray the entire cap with 'Ignition Sealer'.
The splash guard is a problem if you need fast access to the plugs or leads.
You can use a 'Marigold' glove with the ends of the fingers and thumb cut off. Fit one lead through each new hole and use tie-wraps to secure it and waterproof it. The only problem is if it gets any damp inside it's useless and difficult to dry out.

I liked your idea until I saw reference to a rubber glove! I'll refit my cover in the morning.

The glove traps moisture in the dizzy.
Smear vaseline on the mating surface between dizzy body and dizzy cap, that works.

Fitting the splash guard back on for Winter seems easier for me, saves messing around with Vaseline all the time, shouldn't be needing to open your bonnet that often anyway ;D even still they're quick enough to take off!

Mine never seems to have any problems even in the heaviest of rain, and it has no splash guard or vaseline... just a well behaved engine I guess
