The ignition lock is not interlocked with the shifter or anything else in a Mini

Dan, what about the steering lock?

sounds like steering lock to me. without touching the key does the steering wheel move at all? if it doesnt your lock is on and turning the key to the first position while moving the wheel should free it

GummoMarx - have you tried Mr Stocky's suggestion?

long shot but if you can see the outer casing, try giving it a few taps while trying turn the key, may shock it free

Please don't try this until experimenting with the steering lock

Steering lock, ignition lock, same thing!

The OP states he tried to release the pressure on the steering lock by turning the wheel in the opening post. Can we move on from that now? I think it's been suggested, and replied to, enough times. Tapping the lock is a good idea to get the tumblers moving.

have you shorted out any of the wiring, take the switch off the steering lock ,then try turning key.if it fully turns to where it should then its the switch. or drill the heads off the bolts holding the lock on, check locking pin and also the cut out in steering column for burring. you will need 2 new shear bolts to do this

Sounds like a rover problem. Check the last pic of this page
