Jesus they're a right PITA. I'm not paying for someone to look in my engine bay and then charge me to tell me i've got a 1275 fitted.

I'll see what the MOT place says if I ask them to just confirm the engine number is whats fitted and that its a 1275 and enclose that with my V5 and see what they say.

Thanks for the headsup though

You would still need an engineers report verifying that a genuine engine swap had taken place. Also make sure that you get hold of an engine number with the correct prefix for a 1275 too.

Really mate I wouldn't do that, all that will prove is that an MOT station is verifying that your car has the wrong engine in it. So you will be actually highlighting the problem to the DVLA, as opposed to resolving it. The DVLA are quite specific about what they require and the system is purposefully designed to make it difficult for you to register an engine change, basically to stop it being so easy for people to assign a new identity in order to "ring" a car.

So basically they really won't be interested in your protestations about paying for a report top be made, like I said either keep hold of your V5, or declare it properly as they require. If you're still adamant about sending your V5 off without the necessary documents, then at least make sure you have 12 months tax on your car before doing so and be prepared for the long fight that others here have had.

But wouldn't that count as the correct documentation?

'written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle'

If not they can do one!! I'll just not bother changing the engine details just the colour.

Yeah I see where you're coming from, but I think that the requirements of the garages/ engineers report are supposed to be a bit more in depth than just confirming a different engine number. From what I understand "the letter" is supposed to be a detailed report that's supposed to confirm that the car appears to be an otherwise genuine model, that has just had an unsuspicious engine change (i.e it's not a complete late 80's model with a pre 72 reg plate and logbook assigned etc, or that it has other tell tale signs of being a "ringer")

Yeah I see.

I think i'd rather just not declare it than risk any major problems with the V5!

Im in the same position as mike really. Colour change and engine swap. I was going to declare the swap from a 998 to a 1275 to the DVLA but reading this im now confused. I am planing to rebuild the 998 and swap it back before re sale so that its original again and got a fresh block in it when its sold on (hopefully increasing the value). Would I have to declare this to the DVLA?

I have recently changed the engine size on my logbook from 998cc to 1275cc.

I was aware of the changes made by the DVLA to tighten the process up, so I had my local mechanic come and inspect the vehicle after telling him the situation.

1 week later and I have a letter headed report stating that vehicle reg xxxxxxxx has a replacement engine of 1275cc and is of ID xxxxxxxxxxxx from 998cc of ID xxxxxxx. The conversion is up to the correct standards etc......

This is all your letter needs to be. Not majorly in depth, just both engine numbers and capacities and that it is to a good standard. Get the inspector to sign the letter headed report and send it in

10 days later I had the logbook come back. No hassle at all.

If you need a new engine number you may want to look into the possibility of creating your own unique ID and if that is enough. - Check if this is legal.

I don't have my old engine ID :/

It should still be on your old v5.

I've got this all to come myself pretty soon, both with an engine and colour change. Although as I bought the mini originaly without an engine and the replacement engine/blocks been skimmed, I don't have a new engine id. But as the new engine is of the same cc as the original, I might just get an engine tag made up of the cars original engine id and leave it.
Should then mean I just have to change the colour, well that's unless they need proff of that too?
