Looking good dude! are you doing the whole car in the blue?

Top half is black, or will be. Except the roof as I've not figured how to do that yet... :P

Skortchio...im sure somebody reading this thread who want to learn how to rollerpainting could lend a hand when it comes to the roof!

I'll get it covered, not in a rush as you chaps are far behind :P

I might just get roofless to make me a checkered vinyl that's black and white (as opposed to one colour and clear). That was I only need go around the edge!

No doubt you will dude.
I have to say the paint usage is ridiculous, I'm on 4 coats I think and have used maybe 450ml but there's always been waste each time as I'm trying to gauge how much I need for a lap of the car.

Having a lot of trouble with dust, todays mission is to hose the gazebo walls and driveway before I start to see it helps the issue.
My only other concern is durablility, but then the coachpainter chaps seemed to think it was the business so maybe it's a case once it properly hardens it's tough. Mostly I'm worried about just getting finised and banging into it with the chair!

Although with the amount of paint I have I can just put another 20 coats on

Fully agree with you re usage seem to be using hardly any paint whatsoever its criminal!! lol you could always put a few extra coats and deepen the layers if your worried about banging your chair on it.....but colour match wont be an issue and as we are both seeing blending and colour match is not an issue !

having the same dust issues suppose thats the downside of not having a professional spray booth!! but thats where the light sanding between coats and the final polishing comes in to make it all fine and dandy. Durability should not bne an issue as it will be plenty thick enough and well it is metal paint after all ! The coach painters use it on everything even those narrow boats that get banged about are are out in the sun all day long so not too bothered abouth that.

wonder how many coats we can put on ..what the record lol !!!

Cheers

I think the rolledon guys average between 8 and 10 coats on the 'proper' jobs, some guys just throw a few on for a quick cover up.

I'm going with at least 10, going to check how the paint laid today as I upped the mix slightly to about 65% paint. Seemed a more consistent coat, as long as it lays flat :P

Im still keeping at 50/50 the only issue I have found that messes everyhing up is if I put too much paint on the roller, I literally loaded my roller so lightly and that did the front wing so smooth. However I put too much on when doing one half of the bonnet and at first glance it looks orange peel (not settle properly or dried yet) as opposed to the other lightly rollered side that looks like glass!

Will be using many light coats prob until paint runs out lol ... to keep the finish and to minimise on the ammount of sanding etc required prior to polishing, May up my paint too to see how it goes as reckon like you it will offer better coverage and if kept light should lay well.

Cheers

Slow start today as I had to wait for the shopping to turn up. Just had a nose and 65-70% paint (1.5 protein cups paint to 1 spirit) seems to have leveled okay.

So here we go sanding off the dust again :P
Out of curiosity BM how much flatting are you doing between coats? Yesterday I was a bit more thorough, almost flatted right down with 400grit but only going to do that every 4 coats until now I've just whizzed over it to remove hair and dust spots but not made a point of flatting the paint itself as such... Hmm that didn't make sense.

I give it a quick run over with 400grit until it feels smooth, but not goong so far as removing all the visible high points, like you would when polishing. Yeah that made more sense.

How about you?

1Pretty much as you do I bought a job lot of sanding blocks a while back some are really reckon they range form 220 - 800 and i tend to use the ones that are approx 400g to take the shine off and any dust etc. Not too bothered about the tiny tiny dimples as polishing will get rid of the those where there are any.

I re did my boot lid, gave it good going over...dimples and all removing all shine, dimples and dust and gave it coat of 50/50 and the finish is just as good as my bonnet without that having being sanded to get rid of dimples. think im obsessing over sanding inbetween and a good 400g all over so its smooth to the touch will do without getting the magnifying glass out.

The other side of my bonnet (left side) where i was heavy with the paint has now settled to a good standard and am happy with it, will still be keeping to light loaded roller as it is in all honesty a lot easier.

Still not changed my ratio yet I do it by eye in a used but clean paste Jar so I can give it a good shake and mix.

Also brushed my front valance. Bristle brush not foam brush but will pick a foam one up next week.

As for the POUNDLAND rollers the ones that come with the LONG handled roller are top notch. The smaller ones are not very good at all.

Wing is looking good, gave that after one coat a 400g rub back, wiped it down with industrial kitchen roll and white spirit then applied a really light coat that I had to work to spread it all over....again a mirror like finish with no blemisihes save for the dreaded dust !!!

Need to get the car out of the garage and finish the rest of the bodywork instead of just painting the completed panels boot and bonnet. have a couiple of days next week so hopefully can do it then so I do as your (Skortchio) doing and do a complete coat in one hit.

It's not that complete :P I skip out on the roof and boot, only just filled and sanded the original paint on the boot d'oh

I know what you mean about the difference between flatting right back or just a quick level. I flatted one wing really well, final polish like and the coat wasn't any different to the wing I just rubbed down to remove dirt and bugs :P
Saves about an hour of sanding a day! :D

I just refit my bonnet, easier to roll it on the car and keeps it out the way. Once I've prepped the boot I'll refit that too, I think.
Now for a coffee and then wash and wipe the car before more paint.

Why didn't I just spray it again?

PAINT FINALLY CAME!!!!

Unfortunately its my sister's birthday and apparently its rude if you ignore everyone to work on your car. To make matters more annoying, I'm off to Swansea tomorrow to work over the bank holiday.

Its annoying being so far behind you guys now....

Hey, you got the paint. You'll be at the same point in no time.

If it's any consolation I didn't get a coat on today, by the time I'd refit the bonnet and washed down the paintwork after sanding - which took ages as I managed to lose the sponge with scrubby pad between the garage and driveway... Then my brother arrived to give me a lift home.

Any cake left?
