Hi all,

I'm planning on a strip and respray in the summer and I'm probably going to go for Tartan red with a black roof and I'd like to see some more pics before I make up my mind.

I love retro styled cars: 10x5 wheels, group 2 arches with chrome trim, mk2/3 rear lights, overriders etc you get the idea.

So, use this opportunity to entertain me and show off your lovely cars! Get posting

Don't have red/black, but here is a 1986 Mayfair 998 which my Grandson and I did a while back (ignore the date, it was taken in 2009). Engine is 1062 cc with lots of nice bits. Paint colour is Tartan red/Old English White.

Cheers Cooperman, that's pretty cool! With those wheels and arches it looks a bit like GRX 310D. Mine is currently targa red with a white roof and stripes and I quite like it but I'm a bit bored of it being the same as so many of the other minis I see around. That engine sounds like fun though, hvae you a got a bit more on the spec?

Spec for engine was basicallya s follows:

Bored +0.080" to 1062 cc with Hastings flat-top pistons
12G295 Cooper head, gas-flowed and skimmed to give 10.3:1 CR
Howley alloy inlet manifold, cleaned up and fitted with HS4 carb
Cooper 998 3-into-1 exhaust manifold with RC40 silencer box and centre exit pipe, 1.75" int. dia.
Aldon 'Yellow' distributor
Slightly lightened flywheel
Mk.1 Cooper 'S' 510 cam
Late solid-type rocker shaft

Gearbox was standard with 3.2:1 final drive ratio
Wheels 4.5" Minilite with Yoko A539's. Group 2 wheel arch extensions painted in body colour.

It had about 65 bhp at 6000 rpm and was super to drive - very smooth engine with good mid-range. I have loads more photos if you feel they would help

I have always had my cars tartan red with white roof ever since I first rallied in one that colour in 1961. That was before the 'works' painted their cars that colour.

Thanks for the info, sounds like a good engine. I'm not really in the position to do any engine work at the moment for insurance reasons, plus I'd rather have a good strong clean car to put it in. I like hot small bores because they're a bit different but in a couple of years I want to build a 1293 or 1310.

My rough idea of a spec would be
1293 or 1310
SW5 cam
A nice head with something like 35mm inlet and 29mm outlet, well ported, 1.5 roller rockers.
Around 10.5:1 CR
Twin HS4 carbs
Slightly lightened flywheel
centre exit rc40 or maniflow
should be a nice useable daily drive!

I like red and white but after Beaulieu and a few other shows I like black more for a road car

I love Tartan red. But I also love BRG as well. My cooper is red and I can't decide what colour to go after the rebuild. Fortunately, I have a lot of time to decide
