They should be an MOT fail as structurally they're unsound

YES! BAN THEM, AND MAKE THEM AN MOT FAILURE TOO! I LIKE IT VERY MUCH.
I am really glad there is good agreement about this, but just wait for some smart alec who does not know what he is talking about to dispute the facts. There is always at least one on any forum.
I am fairly certain that an astute MOT tester can already fail them, because they do not conform to the rules for panel replacement (spot, or alternatively, plug weld all round, similar to the original) or for panel repair (continuous seam to make it as strong as a panel in good condition). But a tester who is not familiar with Minis might not know that they are non-standard.
Structurally unsound, because the line of the welds at the lower edge is nowhere near where it needs to be to make a proper box section.

I hate them.
But I also know that the reason a lot of minis survived because of them.
If it wasnt for cheap fixes, lots of minis would have been scrapped years ago when they went through thrie 'old banger' phases

i've worked on some very modern cars, such as peugeots, which contained foam in the sills from new. i've also seen it used in the building trade, it's very strong and doesn't soak and water.
as for using it on mini sills, surely the drain holes would be a good thing. if it's used at various fill points, it would expand and fill the box section and seep from the drain holes. then remove the excess after it's gone off.
of course, this is only a theory and an attempt to bring the thread back on topic and off the over sills, which incidentally, i agree with the above points.
