Hi, I have had my eye on a mini on a drive for years, finally took the plunge and bought it.. If I get it rolling and get the brakes working, can I tow it about 1/4 a mile up the road ?

Thanks

put the tow cars number plate on the back of the mini and make it known it says 'On Tow'

shouldnt be an issue, but still try to not go on regularly used roads ;D

I'd play it safe and find someone with a solid straight bar You can tow it with, tow ropes are illegal. Make sure You take the battery off the mini though as if it is connected the police can do You for no insurance on the Mini as it could be started. With a straight bar for towing the car which is towing it is insured and the mini is classed as a trailer as no battery is connected. Obviously put the on tow sign on the back & the reg of the vehicle towing.

This is what I have been told by a mechanic friend of mine.

Should be fine 1/4 mile up the road but I was pretty sure that if the cars not taxed the wheels aren't allowed to touch the road, even if it's being towed, so technically you'll need a trailer, but should be fine as long as above you make it clear it's on tow

Good Luck!!

at the end of the day your going to get 2 different kind of replies those that say its illegal its a crime borrow a trailer etc and those that say for god sake its 1/4 of a mile id do what willets 8527 suggests and tow it and hope there are no extremely harsh rozzers around.

It's NOT legal to do this - no tax/insurance/MOT. So you either take a chance (and 1/4 mile isn't far...) - or put it on a trailer. And removing the battery makes no odds - but removing the engine unit would !

its not illegal to put a car on the road without an mot or tax............because theres certain circumstances......like if your taking the car to a "place of repair" which you are (your house) or to a post office to get tax (which you could be for all the coppers know) but best bet, do it late at night when the roads are quiet, so your not really causing much of a nuisance to anyone. how many police officers do you see on this stretch of road regulary? if some police do see you worse case scenario? they pull you offer and call a recovery truck lol but what are the chances?

tow ropes.....less than 1.5m your ok, over 4.5m its illegal.....in between 1.5m and 4.5m you need to tie a flag or bright piece of cloth to the rope or chain as to alert other drivers.

so as the above sentence is online on a police website im guessing tow ropes arent illegal, plus halfords and plenty of other motor shops still sell them (i know this doesnt make them legal)

Up to you, it's a risk but you probably won't get caught, I had to move mine about the same distance, we pushed it!! Took a while but we got there ;)
