I agree with both Cooperman... and Charie_t. IF the engine was completely in the car/truck I would at least go through the process of restarting an old engine that hasn't run for a while and get it going. Once you have seen and heard it run you can do a compression test and a leak down test. Those two tests will give you an idea of whether the engine is in reasonable health.

That said... since the engine is not completely installed, it seems like wasted effort to complete the installation only to find out that the engine is tired and needs to be rebuilt. Like Cooperman, I like knowing the condition of everything but that may end up upsetting you or emptying your wallet. The 2000 GBP figure for a well done rebuild sounds reasonable to me. When I last rebuilt a Mini engine (8 years ago) that set me back about $2000 and I did a lot of the work myself excluding the machining. Time marches on and things cost more money.
