I believe the MOT (shaken) in Japan is very strict and costs about £1000 for the test every couple of years..........originally designed to make people scrap their cars early and keep the Japanese motor industry new car sales up. Therefore many used cars including thousands of 1990's Mini's are scrapped or exported long before rust or mechanical wear and tear is an issue. As the Japanese are RH drive the UK, New Zealand and Australia take some of the exports..............many low mileage secondhand engines are also exported from the thousands of scrapped modern Japanese cars. What a waste!

Is that a BMW Z1 I spy? If this is in the UK then I would seriously think about legally owning them and then selling them on, you'd make a quick buck and save a shed load of minis. Or even if you offered to sell them on the owners behalf and take a 50% cut of the money or something.

I didn't pay much attention but it think it is a vette. It's black and just has a red bonnet sat on top and 2 tyres on top of that.

Looking at the pics and actually counting instead of guessing there are 7 of them! And I should have said - it is in Japan...

While there is a Mini club that go touring occasionally the guys who organize it also run the mini garage. And everyone around here gets everything done by them. Oil changes, change a headlight bulb, have a new gear lever knob fitted... So it is unlikely that anyone will want to help me restore them. And I don't know where to start, which is why I wanted one in the first place to learn a few things.

The Japanese MOT thing is true. It gets more expensive every time as the car gets older. My Elgrand is in right now. 2 years ago it cost 100,000 yen this time it'll be about 150,000 yen.

Are minis in the UK in such short supply now? Obviously when I passed my test 14 years ago there were still loads and I got a cheap one as my first car, spent loads of time and money doing it up, had a small accident got angry with myself and scrapped it for 25 quid! Back then I didn't think about fixing it because it was easier to buy another and start again. Didn't get around to it and moved to Japan.

If minis are in such short supply maybe it is worth exporting some. Has anyone imported from japan? I reckon there are hundreds if not thousands of cars like this here.
