OK this is going to sound odd, but if I'm fitting new hoses in the car then would stainless steel jubilee clips be suitable - seems to make sense but most suppliers state 'for maritime use'. Presume they are just as stong as normal ones???

Stronger in my experience. There are different grades of stainless, not all of them cope as well in salt water, perhaps that's what they're saying?

Thats what I use, then at least you can get your hoses back off again when you need to. :)

It important what kind of stainless steel jubilee clip you get tho.

I got ones that where stainless steel but had a ladder kind of design on the strap of the clip, so lots of slats. They where useless, you couldn't tighten them proper with out the 'slats' breaking. they looked like these:

Try and get ones that are the same design as the original ones, but in stainless steel. The ones that have the ridges.

or if you really want strength and stainless steel I've wanted to get these kind of ones.

I would not be put-off by the description of a clamp as "marine grade". They will work fine on a car. The "ladder" type will work fine. I have never seen the "rungs" break as described above when normal torque/tightening is carried out (perhaps you got hold of some Chinese ones?). The biggest complaint about the ladder type clips I have is that the rungs of the ladder will cut the rubber jacket of the hose. That's OK if you don't have to remove the hoses more than once or twice but the damage is cumulative.

The Germans (VW etc.) use a similar clamp where the rungs are embossed in the band instead of cut through. I much prefer those for hoses... when I can find them. See them in the link below.

yeah they ladder ones where quite cheap, but still, i think the ridges one would be stronger and take a higher torque.

but still, lesson is (for me at least), dont buy cheap :D

The Mikalor clamp looks very nice, and works as well as it looks, but please note that it has a very much smaller adjustment range than a jubilee clip, so you need to be very sure to get the correct size.

I generally use normal zinc plated (galvanised) mild steel jubilee clips from Halfords, which are reliable, but admittedly the stainless variety do look rather nice.

I liked the sound of stainless one because the normal ones corrode and get really stiff so easy. you end up rounding of the tops of them. So much better with stainless steel ones espesh the mikalor ones.
