Hi All
I'm considering replacing some hoses in my SPi and thought about fitting a new water pump whilst it's all out etc. I don't think it's much of a job but I am concerned about stuck/snapped bolts etc - does this occur much with these?? I'd hate to replace it as a preventative measure only to make my mini u/s! any past experience appreciated!!

I'll third that, just get the other bits out the way and it's easy, just don't forget a new bypass hose, and don't forget to put the do collar clips on before you tighten it, like me. Lol.

Though i've had a lot of these issues with thermostat housing bolts/studs in the cyl head i've never had snapped bolts on the water pump.
Easy job, always worth replacing water pump and the bypass hose. Do not use those 'easy-fit' concertina bypass-hoses, they're proven to last about 200-500miles only and are only worth to have them as a spare for road-side repairs.
(Would be best if you blank the by-pass off and drill a couple of holes in the thermostat instead of the dready hose.. :whistling: )

Is there a problem with the water pump? If not, why fix what's not broke.

If you can't find a new bypass hose, a short piece of heater hose and two new jubilee clips does the job nicely. If your model has a bypass hose, of course.

And, as has been said, never, ever fit the convoluted type. They fail quickly, and spectacularly.

It's an SPi, it doesn't have a bypass hose.

As said above, why disturb it if it's working? They aren't prone to failure.

cheers Dan, just really thinking as i need to replace a few hoses if it would make sense to do this at the same time......... however if it's not thought of to be problematic then maybe best leave it alone?

In all honesty for the time it takes to pull out the rad and change the pump if it ever does fail, changing it just in case is not really worthwhile. If it's not showing any signs of leaking from the witness hole on the pump body (which is there to show if water has got past the shaft seal and the pump's rear bearing) or around the gasket then just leave it.

Look at the impeller, the cheap ones are crappy pressed steel, better ones are cast. Also look at the gap between impeller and casing. If its too big it affects efficiency, but can be sorted with careful use of a press.

How many miles has engine covered? I just took an SPi to pieces which had done 50,000 ish miles and the pump was A-ok. No leaks, bearing sweet, impeller in good condition. By the way the bolts came out very easily and could be re-used.
As already stated the SPi has no by-pass hose. Hope this helps your decision.
