Hi,

just as it says really. I think as you look at the timing chain it rotated clockwise, (old thread), but not sure.

I wouldn't bother but the chain I have has a link in it and needs to go on the correct way

As I look at it, chain side but right way up

As it stands it is on the wrong way round if it rotates clockwise.

Also how tight does the tensioner need to be on the chain??

Many thanks,

Graham

Also, forgot...

The cam when retained by the triangular plate moves in and out by a couple of mm. Once the chain gear is on it tightens up to a midge of movement. I have looked on the mini mania vids and this seems ok, just wasn't expecting the movement before the chain gear was tightened on ???

You are correct, the cam sprocket and triangle plate both have to be fitted and tightened up to measure endfloat. I have not memorized the exact figure but it is only about 0.003" of play you are looking for. The play you saw without the gear in place is typical.

I have not seen chains with coupling links in them. If you are worried about the direction of the chain because of the coupling link, you should be able to gently remove the clip shown in your picture and put it back on so it is facing the other direction.

Is the engine stand in your living room? It looks like a nice heater and couch behind the stand.

Thanks for the replies.

Yea, in the conservatory which is open to the living room, wifey loves me lol. It is all clean and shiny work at the moment though so getting away with it, just !!

The end float is 12 tho, are there cam shims available as I couldn't find any online ??

I dont believe so,no. You'll have to get 9 thou machined from the relevant part of the sprocket so that it moves closer to the cam. That is of course assuming the triangle plate isn't worn at all.

This may be a daft question, but why do you have a chain with a detachable link?

All engines I've ever known rotate clockwise unless, puts on 'bus geek' hat, you have an engine out of a 1935 AEC 'Q-type' bus, which went anti-clockwise :geek:

That's how it came !! The one I took off didn't have it but hey ho should be fine if going in the right direction.

I don't understand what to get machined ?? If I take material off the sproke twont it will make the gap larger ???

How do I do this??

I have been reading and if the triangular plate is worn, that can affect the end float.

What thickness should they be, and if I replace with a new one wont it just push the sprocket further out away from the cam, making the endfloat bigger??

Sorry for all the questions,

Graham

Have you torqued the cam nut yet? Or are you measuring the end float with the nut finger tight?

No, torqued up to 65 lb/ft, the locating plate looked a 'little' worn but I don't see how a thicker / new one would help!! Shims over the end of the cam would take up the slack, but can't find any !!
