hi all, i picked my 1098 engine up today as the one in our mini is burning oil plus the crank rumbles a bit on start up from cold, i got the new engine off ebay and it is on an A+ gearbox and has an A+ transfer casing but the engine itself is a pre A+ block so i'm not sure whats going on there!!

i need a pre A+ distributor if anyone has one for sale as i only have A+ distributors.

heres some pics.... :proud:

looks like the bores have been glaze busted so it may have had new rings!

removed the cam and followers, they are in really good condition, the cam is a pin drive so its probably an old engine

I'd go with a Kent 266 or Swifttune SW5, the standard 1098 cam isn't anything special.

i'm going to keep the 202 head and just open the ports up slightly, fit new stem seals etc, i'm either going to go for a kent 266 or a newman PH2 cam as i've heard good things about those cams.

ok guys, i've sourced a hardly used kent 266 cam and a duplex timing gear set from ebay (a lucky last minute find) i paid £48 for both which wasnt too bad i think, as soon as they arrive i can crack on with the build.

i did a test run to see what the standard cam was timed in at, it came back at 110 degrees for the 1100 cam and 105 degrees for the 998 cam that i've got, i also found out why the engine was blowing a bit of smoke on start up (according to the guy that i got the engine from) ......someone has put the valve stem oil seals on the exhaust valves instead of the inlet valves!!.....no wonder it smoked on start up!!
