right then i was going to paint my mini in cellulose paint but things have changed and i am now hoping to paint it using 2 pack paint i have read that the finish is far better and longer lasting ?????.
but is it any easier to paint with or harder than cellulose...also am i right in saying that 2 pack uses an activator and also a small amount of thinners..im hoping to paint the whole car so any help about how much paint and activator and thinners i would need...and do i still use a high build primer...and also how many coats of colour would you advice and the same question about lacquer...i know people must get sick of people like me asking basic questions but thanks for any help anybody can give...steve...

Do you have a compressor big enough to run an air gun and an air fed visor?

Unless you spend a huge amount of money on safety gear and air filters etc. then you can't spray 2k yourself. It's dangerous and without the proper gear you will damage yourself!

I have used 2k on a few occasions, I know you say air fed masks are dealt with please make sure they are, when I have used 2k I have used 2 compressors one for gun and a second kept outside workshop to run my mask away from the fumes!! I have always used a high build primer as this helps remove any imperfections in fillers and body panels that our eyes do not see until the shine is applied. I usually do 2 coats of high build primer then rub back using the guide coat method starting on 400 grit working up to 800, then I apply 2 coats of colour (if metallic definatley no rubbing down inbetween coats) and as many lacquers as possible to allow you to be able to colour sand the orange peel away and buff to a good even finish

You won't get a single compressor to run a spray gun and air fed mask off single phase 240V mains - don't even think about it. As above, I use 2 compressors and if you live on a housing estate or have immediate neighbours then don't use it.

Paul.

Steve from bare metal i tend to go in this process.

Im in the same situation as you in terms of not being able to use 2k.

Bare metal. machine sand with 60grit to get it a good key.
zinc rich primer. You could use etch without sanding the bare metal but i like the protection zinc offers
high build (cellulose)
filler
second skim of filler (im not good with filler)
stopper
high build
probably more stopper when i spot something here
high build
top coat (cellulose)
top coat (cellulose)
top coat. (cellulose)

Quite a nice guide I found a while ago

http://retrorides.pr...nt&thread=48784

I'd stick will celly, but I would shoot some sealer before I painted to prevent reactions.

I'm assuming that you're not gonna be doing a bare metal job?

Flat back and then fill as required.

Give it a coat of Bar coat to prevent reactions

MIPA do a nice combined filler and etch primer, so give it a few coats of that.

Flat it back and then top coat.

I tend not to use bar coat. I always to back to the good old steel.

But honestly this takes forever and a day to build it back up.

Bar coat does work well. It only needs to be a thin coat and needs to be even.

you are right it is very poisonous stuff - but if your carefull and buy a good face mask and a throw away spray suit. you should be fine.
gerson or 3m make excellent masks that you can paint 2k paints with for up to 40hrs for about 25 quid. i have used both for years and they are very good. had no probs. and the suits are about £10 made by du pont.

and also once given a coat of paint your not goin to stay in the garage with the fumes are you?? well hopefully not!!

if were mine:
etch primer (upol acid 8) just because it dries quicker than 2k

hb body spray on filler/putty- if you have a few repairs and want them dead straight its excellent stuff, if not dont use it. flat with p180

2k primer-flat all the way up to p800 wed n dry

2k paint- as for amount of coats really depends on how u put the stuff on, because everyone is different with a spray gun. but very similar to cellulose get as much as you want on there, and flat the hell out of it for a wicked shine and finish. bout 4-5 coats should do.

2k paint mix 2:1 with hardener and a bit of 2k thinner if you want 5-10%

there should be loads of walkthroughs on here mate

Check out the advice here... http://www.mig-weldi...aint-safety.htm

And particularly the experiences of somebody who did not wear the right safety gear... http://www.mig-weldi...ead.php?t=14051

He's still alive but permanently affected by the stuf!!!!

Paul.
