I like what you are doing with this project as i ran a business customising golf carts and most of my custom parts were fabricated in house! Lifted carts like monster trucks, lowered carts like race cars and fully altered body work was our specialty.

i put the end of the 12mm bar into the bearing like so..
bolted down and hooked up to the drill, ideal for seam weldin the sprocket to the bar!
then with the grinder to dress/roughly balance the welds/sprocket
and end up with...
i still have to get the ends turned down to 8 or 10mm so i can put a thread on it to hold the wheels on! more tomorrow!

this was once a pillow block bearing, it had 2 "feet" that you bolt it to something with, i cut 1 of these off and welded 2" box section that i can use to bolt it to the car itself, the bolt on top will bolt through the panel just above the healboard, and through the heal board itself once i have welded a cap on the end with an internal nut to bolt it through, making it nice and strong! i still need to dress the welds but i was rushing a little as had to pick the missus from work lol
i was gonna use a cheaper more lighter bearing, but decided to use these as they are designed for high speed, so should cope very well and give a nice smooth axle rotation, good thing is that the bearing is semi-rose joint, so not only does the bearing spin, if the bearing housing were not 100% true in line, the bearings themselves will swivel in the housing to allow perfect alinement of the axle/bearings ;)

still need to tie the roll cage into the rear end, but waiting on some new rear wheels, slightly bigger, and twice as wide ;) so need them to get the axle machined and fitted up, so i can re-fettle the rear arches to fit the new wheels, then i can finish the roll cage, and then get to work on the external panels ;)
