Will a knakered thermostat stop water from circulating? I had engine running for about 15 min then it just cut out. Water wasn't flowing and all pipes were soft still. This was second time I've had engine runnin in 3 years I think ( I've had it a year) but I've took the thermostat off and boiled it and it's not opening until the water is actually boiling. Where am
I'm sure it's meant to open at 84 degrees highest am
I right. Anyway need some ideas why water isn't flowing if it won't be because thermostat not working

I'd replace the thermostat with new as a matter of course. Due to the price of them, I've never understood the point of purring an old one back in again any way. If the coolant isn't flowing at all though, I'd probably suspect a knackered water pump.

Normally, thermostats fail open.

Cheap as chips anyway.

I've seen far more fail closed than open myself.

Unfortunately a thermostat is cheaper than a 100 degree thermometer so replacing is the frugal option. If you do know anyone with an appropriate thermometer it's worth testing it though...

I think the Haynes manual describes a method by where you suspend the stat in a pan of water, get a regular thermometer and start to boil the water, keep an eye on both the termrmometer and stats and see at what temp it opens up, so this will tell you first if its working at all, and also if its working at the correct temp.

As above though, I'd sooner boil the water, go out and buy a new stat and gaskets etc, come home, fit new stat then make tea with boiled water.
