hi all, i am toying with the idea of turbo charging my mini in the near future and i've been reading up on turbo installations...

can i use my standard HS4 carb as i have heard about blow through and suck through systems and i am a little confused about the different set up...

Cheers

Std Hs4 carb isn't sealed for blow through systems. Your best bet is turbominis website its all been done and explained there many
times before.

Yes you can use a standard HS4, it's not perfectly sealed, but it will work.

However, the problem with using the HS4 is pressurising the float bowl. If you use the turbo HIF44 and the metro turbo plenum it solves all these problems.

A suck through carb goes before the turbo so just sees the turbo and engine as a bigger engine - the downside is the fuel is in the air as it it goes through the turbo (& any intercooler), not ideal, think Dyson vacuum cleaner.

Blow through works like a normally aspirated engine, but you need a sealed system that doesn't leak pressurised fuel/air mixture, feeds boost pressure in place atmospheric and adjusts for the higher air density when the turbo kicks in. It's the Metty Turbo plenum that does the last bit by putting a restriction on the throat of the carb so it sees slightly lower pressure than what is fed to the float chamber from before the restrictor - simples.

If you get an ordinary HIF (38 or 44) you can convert it using a rebuild kit & float for the Turbo Carb.
