Friend of mine got an advisory on the MOT for the car being lowered! " Vehicle is lowered "

(This was on a VW golf) Its only about 20mm lower than standard and not on the floor like some cars you see.

Whats that all about :ohno: the new MOT rules?

That's a bit harsh from Mr. MOT man!

Max is lowered 20mm and sailed through the MOT in september.

It's just to cover his back, one of those things I would guess. Like if you take you passenger seat out so the seatbelts aren't tested then the advisory would rear 'no passenger seat' so if you put one back in and VOSA pulled it up with no seatbelt the MOT man is covered, I wouldn't worry about it.

My last MOT I got the following advisories, which were written as shown, on my Mini which has a fibreglass front and full coilovers:

Front panels modified (fibreglass)
Front subframe modified (brace bars)
Front suspension modified
Rear suspension modified
Ride height non-standard

The guy said to me he was only doing it to cover his own back. They are advisories so they dont bother me.

Are advisories 'things that are borderline a fail' or can they just be helpful advisory notes, 'incase you didn't know, the vehicle has been lowered'

Depends. Sometimes its a future warning that for your next MOT it will probably need doing i.e. slight play in such and such. Sometimes its incase you werent aware. Sometimes its just to cover their back incase you get pulled and they get in trouble!

In theory they are advice on a possible future problem or a note to VOSA that something was noticed but is technically not legal.

Things like worn tyres are obviously legal now but may be illegal before the next test so the tester will put an advisory down to say he is aware that on the day of test they were fine but cannot speak for the whole year.

Things like 'no passenger seat' are basically to let VOSA know that the tester noticed the lack of seat negating the need for mount and seatbelt checks. But it means that if you put a seat back in then it is not the testers fault of the seat mounts or seatbelts are not up to standard as when he tested the car, they were not present.

All this is POSSIBLY to do with undeclared mods to he insurance. If its on the mot (computer database) then insurers could in theory use it to find out "misguided info"
