Haha, I'm sure you'll probably just break even with having the flip front and all.

Question for you actually, what are your gas struts off and how strong are they? I've pinched some off a 106 for my front but I fear they are far too powerful and are just going to snap my front end in two >_<.

I work at a coach builders and we use these to hold up the locker doors.
iam currently using 1 x 150nm and 1 x 200nm gas strut. I am trying to
get hold of another 200nm strut to replace the 150nm.

then they will hold the front open in any position not just fully open.

they are also alot shorter than tail gate struts.

150nm, how weak would that be? I've no way of measuring how strong these 106 struts are.

Do you think 150nm would be gentle enough for a fiberglass front?

my front is fibre glass! you would really need 2 x 150nm min

Yeah but you have fancy hinges so the pressure is against the metal hinge not the fg front. I'm going to have mine hinge forward and it'd be connected to the front itself. I had a look at the struts I have, they're 180nm.

make a spreader plate with a bracket on to spread the stress, and bond it to the front.
then you should be ok. my 'fancy' hinges are the original hinges from
the steel front.. as I used half the stiffener frame as a support for my front.

Might be worth a go.

My main fear is the fact my front is going to have a safety catch at one side of the car, so i'll pop the front from the inside and it'll start to lift but the safety catch on the driver side will stop it. My fear is that the ram on the passenger side will continue to push and will twist and possibly snap my front in two.

I guess I could use a gas strut on the driver side and something else on the passenger side, hmm. Food for thought.

you could set your struts so they don't actually open the bonnet
when it is released only when it has been lifted a little, you could
utilise a spring (like a bonnet catch spring mechanism) to just
open the front when the release is pulled allowing you to release
the safety and open the front with the aid of the gas struts.

Done a bit on Ratty, a bit more prep work on the rear end and
valance, also had to increase two off the radius arm bolts to 10mm
as one of the threads stripped :teehee: so had to tap it out,
all sorted now... lovely negative camber

You know, I think my struts might be a bit strange. Are they supposed to be able to stay compressed? Because these are constantly under pressure, if you want them compressed you have to hold them like that.

Where are the pictures man?!

Hi Fen buzzard, thanks for the praise, I probably would
like it to be in a mag but they wouldn't have enough room for
my 490 photo's LOL :bah: . As i've said before though it is being
built to be driven and not to be a show car.. even though it
may be take me to a few shows....

this is an awsome project! just read through it, you have some really good skills! love the flat front to it, really original thinking, also great idea with the bonnet hinges! and the external hinges on the doors! are you going to put sliding windows in?

not too keen on the wheels you have, but the idea for the new ones is cool! keep up the good work!

only using those wheels as i got them with the car. would like deep dish
superlights or star mags.. would like to fit sliding windows but looks too
be costly to convert. might remove winding mechanisms and have manual
sliders..
