Hi retro10's the only place you could put a plate behind the seam would
be in the boot area, you wouldn't be able to put a plate in the pillars,
The seams are originally spot welded, they are now fully seam welded
so I would assume they would be stronger. I left about 1 or 2mm of
seam, seam welded it then I it knocked in, I can't see why this would
be any less stronger than the original. I have de-seamed a mini
before and had no problems. The only affect i would think it may make
the shell too rigid .

no it wasnt concern as such just curiosity... and then i thought about it and yeah, the only only place you could plate up behind would be the back of the car.

So do you then grind back the welds and fibreglass/filler/elephant dung/whatever over them and get smoothing?

i removed as little of the weld as poss just to tidy it up, then knocked it in
and built it back to a rough profile with glass filler, then i'll finish off
with polyester filler.

Sunshine...... Been out and cleaned the front subframe.

de-greased then power washed and painted.



new tower pads arrived hoping to refit over weekend.

Bummer !!! went to the post office to pick up a parcel, thought
it was my tower pads , but it was my printer cartridges
so can't fit the subframe.

re-fitted front subframe with solid rear mounts and poly tower
mounts



strengthened front shock mounts and painted

I'm starting to get the itch again, and I am getting VERY tempted to try a Harley engined Mini - just for pure noise... tweed grey, black roof, black arches, proper chromed VW wheels.....


So yeh, your project is giving me a lot of inspirations...

to get some new poly bushes for that to.
then get it rolling so i can move it out the garage..
