well got the motor in on Saturday, but it was turning over very slow, seems quite tight
Got a new starter as it had played up before . but, still no joy.
Well been on it this afternoon, took the clutch off , no joy.

This is how state of play ended today

Going to strip it and make sure the rings that I bought were std rings and not
oversize, were listed as standard..

If the rings were oversize, you wouldn’t have been able to get them in the bores to start with.

As with any new/rebuilt engine, all it probably needs is a decent battery and good starter motor, once it’s been run it should losen up.

does turn but very tight, you can't turn it without a lever of some sort, crank turned freely without pistons fitted. standard rings fitted, that's why I think the rings are wrong. should be easy to turn
as it's standard bore.

Did you fit new bearings as well? And did the locating tabs line up on the caps/rods when they were re-fitted?

well heres an update...... Lounge is finished..

Mini time :D

Well I checked the engine over seemed ok, but my dad came down
and persuaded me (for the cost of a couple of gaskets) to split the
the engine and check it.... So I have.... crank and rods move freely,
gapped the rings and they are ok, Next I am going to remove all the
rings from the pistons and make sure the ring grooves are completely
clear from any debree and carbon.......

well , went in the garage last night, took the pistons out and removed all the rings, then
used an old broken ring and cleaned out the ring grooves. There was a small amount of carbon
in some of the grooves, put all the rings back on and pistons back in. Seems to turn over a little
easier so it will going back together when I get the new gaskets.... :)

OH the joys of Mini ownership........LOL

well, my dad came down today to have a look at the engine, he thought it was too tight, so we
stripped the rods off one by one, found that number one rod looks like the jurnal had over heated
at some point and has deformed, causing it to become tight . plus also found some mark on the crank
looks like the crank is sub standard as it has imperfections in the cast.
