You can be happy it didn't blow up your radiator... (The cap should have blown first. But I've seem a headgasket failure blow up a rad like a balloon)

I'm kind of new here. We used to own a 85 Ritz when we lived in Holland.
We were heartbroken when we had to leave it behind when we moved to Canada. Bought a 1993 1.3i from Japan about 2 months ago. SOOO happy to be owning a mini again.

I'm going to have to do some rust-repairs on it and I hope I don't find the nightmare you encountered!

(it's mindblowing how many people point and smile when they see us driving down the road. And ours is all original. It helps that there are maybe 8 minis in the city I live in, with 200'000 people, that;s a pretty low count. Pretty rare to see a mini here)

I took the head off this afternoon and found the center cylinders had
water in them

That looks like its been gone for a little while.


Standard one should be more than up too the job realy, mine is standard in my 1380 and is going fine after 2500 miles or so.

This topic is awesome, you have done an amazing job Freddy, its so unique i love it, didn't get anywhere near reading through every page, but what i have got through so far is great. Also just about your exhaust annoying the neighbours, was it really that loud before the cherry bomb silencer?? Its just mine is pretty loud but i've never had any problems with people complaing about the noise even when i come home from work at 11-12pm. George.

a chap about 7 houses down the road came out to see what it was when I first
started it up !! , I had personal stereo earphones on the m/way and I
couldn't hear the music on full volume.. LOL.

Haha that must be loud! Isn't just a single box exhaust with lcb mani? Mine should be that loud then when i get round to putting the decat in lol.

Well old Ratty seems to be well again, plus oil pressure seems to have
dropped a bit (85 running) put the pressure spring etc in from the 1000
engine, and seems to be running cooler(water) , oil leakage seems to
have disappeared aswell , so it looks like a few issues have been cured
with the new Gasket

Made a new rev counter brkt at work, gauge is now mounted on the uppper
dash rail next to the mirror.

nearly came to see you tonight, but I thought that you wouldn't be in the lock up
as it's dark and you may not have any lights. Are you out tomorrow night??

yes it may be like yours, wired it up tonight, also put a permanent feed from
the Battery isolator to the dash memory so now I can completely Isolate the electrics
at night without loosing info on the dash !!

Thats a good idea! that was the reason I haven't fitted my isolator as I'd loose my CD player settings and have to reset the rev counter etc.
