You will probably get some more rigidity once you have your numberplate recess section all bonded to the lid & the cross supports you cut put back in.
I don't know what the legalities are of modifying a fuel tank but you could always cut a section of the tank off the end & weld a straight plate over the hole to give you enough clearance for the lights & latch. It'd reduce the capacity a bit but still allow you to retain something original of the tank & still use the same filler neck etc.
