also what do people use to clean the inside glass , there seems to be a residue on one of my windows and ive used glass cleaner but no joy

Good old fashioned de-mister pad for me, I usually use auto-glym glass cleaner, I was bought a set of auto-glym stuff a few christmas' ago and it seems to work fairly well. Avoid touching the glass with anything other than the de-mister pad, I find that's when the "smeariness" starts.

I just use the heater to clear the front screen, and a demister pad for the side windows. Within about a minute the screen is completely clear. My old Mini used to fog quite a lot but my current one doesn't.

I use Auto-Glym fast glass to clean my windows, although sometimes they have some really caked on muck so I clay them first.

Edit: Might be worth working out what's up with the heater if it's not doing its job. It should be somewhat efficient, even on the screen setting.

If its a bright sunny day, leave the windows slightly open , helps dry damp carpets etc, and it will reduce misting up of windows. Make sure its in a safe place, dont want it stolen !

Number one is to get the inside of the car dry - the "fog" is moisture on the screen. Inevitably some will come from your breath but if the carpets are damp/wet then the heater is never going to catch up and you'll simply need to be wiping the moisture off.

The second common one on a Mini is where people ditch the big pipe between the heater and the inner wing and block the hole off in the inner wing. That big pipe is where the heater gets fresh air - without it and if the hole in the inner wing is blocked then the heater is only ever going to circulate the already damp air inside the car. There should be a plenum chamber under the wing and that should have a pipe going under the wing to emerge at the front of the engine bay to draw air from behind the radiator grille (early cars have an ever so slightly different setup but the concept is the same). Usually that pipe has a foam liner - if it's soaked then you are forever going to be drawing damp air into the car. Make sure all these pipes are intact and connected and the heater will stand half a chance.

After that it's making sure that the heater is working -

does the matrix get warm? or is it blocked/disconnected?

does the fan give a decent draught over the screen when the selector is in the screen position? If not why not? are the pipes to the screen vents connected at both ends? Is the flap inside the heater moving and sealing to force the air up to the screen? Is the fan actually generating some air movement?

I find breathing through my nose helps it steam up a bit less/slower but I feel like an idiot asking passengers to do it too >_<

As above and make sure their are no losses in what is only a very basic heater blower working on its limits.........tape up all the air pipe joint connections between the heater blower and the windscreen outlet vents behind the dash panels, any air leaks at joints mean less reaches the screen to clear it, the earlier metal windscreen vents are also much better than the later cheap plastic stapled together type which leak air before it even reaches the screen.
