Use higher octane fuel to start up the engine, and check firing order. You probably messed around refitting the dizzy driveshaft, so dizzy drive resutled 180° out.
Check you have oil pressure before first start.
And 150 psi sounds a bit low, have you fitted new piston rings and got valves relapped?

if it runs with the choke out and runs fine then you either need to adjust the fast idle screw turning it clockwise to keep the revs up or.... the biggy.. adjust the fuel/mixture screw on the back left hand side of the carb... in theory if youve got the choke out thats A. pulling the linkage to open the butterfly putting it onto fast idle and... B. richening the mixture up so you either need to do one or both of these to get it running right.
take the dashpot off and see where the jet sits on the bridge of the carb turn the adjusting screw anti clockwise until the jet is completly level in the top of the bridge in the carb.... mark or make note of where the screwdriver is and then turn the screwdriver 2 complete turns clockwise this should give you a "good" starting point to getting the engine running properly.

The timing was setup with a strobe light when it was running and I've checked it without it running and it's spot on. The car runs and is smooth but will not idle, it just dies when I take my foot off the accelerator or push the choke in, even when it's hot!

Thanks Surfbluegarage, that sounds like a good idea, I'll try that tomorrow. I have played around with the mixture a little but it didn't make any difference really other than when it was to lean it was rough throughout the rev range but I changed that back.
I did adjust the fast idle setting when I put the new choke cable on according to the Haynes Manual but will check that again as well.
I also have some high octane petrol to put in the tank as well.

If its ticking over with the choke out, can't see it being the fast idle, thats the purpose of the fast idle to set the tickover with the choke on.

What about the normal idle screw. If you knock the choke off and hold the revs does it tickover ??

It idled absolutely fine when the engine was running before and the idle screw hasn't been touched. I have done a couple of bits on the carb like on the right hand side of the carb when you look from the front of the car there is another input or output in the body of the carb just bellow the dashpot, but it was blanked with a small plug, someone looked at the carb for me and stupidly had pushed that plug in so I have blanked it with a short bolt and some sealant (making sure the sealant didn't go inside the carb obviously)

Thanks for all the help guys! It's up and working beautifully, got a colour tune today so I'll fine tune the mixture tomorrow. Thanks to whoever suggested how to roughly set the carb, worked beautifully!!
