I recently rebuilt my engine which is a 1275 with a 286 scatter cam, 1 3/4" HIF44 carb and electronic distributor. The car is a 1971 and I believe the wiring is original. The engines year however is unknown, as the block was replaced at some point.
The problem is that it turns over but will not start.
The engine ran for a short time after being built but did struggle to start.
I have checked the compression and it's 150psi across the board
I have checked the ignition timing and when it was running it was timed with a strobe
It's had a new distributor cap, rotor arm, leads and coil
I have checked the spark and gapped the plugs
Also getting fuel and there's over half a tank
I have also checked and I'm getting 13v to the coil

Got petrol in it?

DOH!! I need to read more carefully. :D

Try some easy start squirted into the carb inlet and see if it fires.

Stupid question but have you got the fuel in pipe and the overflow around the correct way? I did this silly mistake with my 1275 :shy:

Just tip some fuel down the carb and crank it. If it starts the ignition is fine, and the problem must be with fuel. And - if not - the problem is obviously with the ignition.......

If my memory serves me right as I'm not infront of the car right now the pipes are round the right way but obviously I will check that, thanks.
I also had a thought last night but maybe the fuel is contaminated because the last thing I did before the car went up on jacks outside on my mates drive was to fill it up, I know it's a long shot but it has got gradually worse. Would unleaded in a classic engine cause any problems?

Unleaded fuel will go off in a remarkably short space of time. I would also check the timing again statically.

No I haven't had a chance, had a couple of long days at work and have no lights round the garage. I will be trying all suggestions tomorrow so will let you know how it goes *crosses fingers*

Ok so I checked the carb connections today, turns out the fuel inlet was connected to the float vent. Now that's sorted the car runs but is very very rough at low revs, any ideas?
The mixture was setup with a colour tune plug

The car now runs pretty well but won't run on idle it just dies. Will run fine when the choke is out but not when I push it in!
Any ideas?

It idled fine before and the screw hasn't been touched. You turn it clockwise to increase idle speed right?
And also the choke cable has seized, it was only fitted a month ago an has been working fine until now!

I had this problem a week or so ago.
With mine the timing was out which I have got nearly spot on.
In the dizzy have you checked the points and the connectors, if its turning over it may not be firing the spark its self at the right time for instance the spark itself is firing between the top dead centre of the pistons, if you get me?
put it in gear and rock it with the dizzy cover off and watch the points and contacts, hope this has helped a little.
