Looking good Rhys! How long before you think she will be back on the road? We've just started welding my car and my rear bins were that bad we couldn't tell how they originally would have been so your pictures are ace mate! They show you just how it should be. I think my car must have missed the anti-rust painting stage at the factory! There is barely any paint inside the bins/sills. She's getting there though.
Keep up the good work! I really am jealous of your car! haha
Cheers
Joe

hi joe, the car has to be ready for the last day of may as that's when i turn 17 but i think we will get it done around the end of april/early may time...honestly though i want it done asap  because i want to show it at all the summer shows this year.

i don't think they ever did an anti rust painting stage for the mini ;D we had to completely reconstruct the N/S bin but the O/S one was no where near as bad so we used it for reference when we rebuilt the N/S bin. i think they rust so bad there because originally part of the lip of the base of the bin runs straight into the sill cavity so when water splashed up through the vents in the outer sills, it collected in the base of the bins >_< we have bent the lips up slightly so less water is thrown up into the bins but still allows water to run out of them, we will also fill the base of the bins with wax oil...lots and lots of wax oil

Cheers for all your positive comments mate

Rhys

Honestly no reason to seam seal continuous welds, only for spot welded panels that aren't completely closed. It would save you money on seam sealer and look alot tidier. :-)

hi

it'll all be covered in waxoil underneath, the inside will be carpeted, the engine bay/bulkhead will be covered in sound deadening and i have a plan to make rear bin liners with speaker pods so you'll never see them...we are building this car to last so if it makes the car last an extra year or so it's worth the money and my dad gets a commercial discount from the place we get it from

cheers

Hi rhys
Not sure if you're aware but the mpi minis had rear bin liners in as standard (i think. Mine did anyway..) I've seen them for sale on eBay a few times and also if I remember there was someoneon ebay that made them. I'm unsure on cost etc but if might save some hassle etc if you could just modify an existing part. If I remember they were quite neat and the seat belts came out of them.
I have planned on getting some and attempting some sort of speaker pod too. I'm not a huge fan of speaker boards under the seat to be honest. I've also considered putting a cigarette lighter/power point in the bin liner too incase a passanger wants to charge their phone or something. I love buttons and gadgets so I think my car will be full of them haha.
Keep up the good work. It all looks good.
Joe

That was my point, it wont make any difference to how long the welds last or preventing rust on them, because that's not whats its for anyway. Was just friendly advise really. :-)

cheers for the advice pal but, at least, if there is a few pin holes along the welds anywhere then the seam sealer will fill them up...sorry if i came across as a bit on the defensive side >_<

hi joe, i have seen these liners occasionally but i don't really want to chop up an original part, that's why i have brought front door pockets from a metro that already have speaker pods in them, i was thinking of just putting a flat piece of mdf about half way down the bin a putting my 8 inch by 4 1/2 inch speakers in that so that you can still use the rear bins to put luggage and things in

Good plan mate. I know what you mean about not wanting to chop an original part. I felt the same when I was stripping bits out of Cherry. Haha. I might just put some 6x9s on the back shelf and put a cover over them so you can't see them. I have seen some door pockets with pods in them on eBay a fair few times. I might get some of them too.

hi joe, beings as we are on the subject of speakers, i am going for:

- original factory speakers on the rear shelf
- two 2 inch speakers to fill the two centre holes of the parcel shelf
- two 8 by 4 1/2 inch speakers in the base of the rear bins (yes they will fit...just )
- two 6 1/2 inch speakers under the rear seats in custom corner pods
- two 5 1/4 inch speakers under the dash in custom pods
- two 4 inch speakers in the metro door pockets (still need to get)

all hidden out of sight and all linked to a radio with usb port, lcd screen (hopefully) and custom iPod dock in top dash rail ash tray

it's going to be loud :gimme: .............. hopefully loud enough to drown out the noise from my straight through exhaust >_<

Cheers

Rhys

Haha. Sounds like a plan! I doubt you'll need to start the engine.. you'll just, sort of, vibrate down the street, shattering people's front windows whilst going past. Haha. I have thought about having a 7inch android tablet built in to the dashboard somehow but. I'm a loooong way away from that stage just yet.. haha. I have a couple of spare radios lying about the place that I could just fit in so I might just put one of them in until I decide on the final installation.
got a bargain today.. I needed a new drivers side radius arm so whilst at the scrapyard looking for somethkng for the focus I saw the rear end of a Mini.. got a rear subframe and both radius arms for £25! Can't go wrong!
Cheers
