Cooperman,

Good point about the Verto. The reason I never suggested whacking the puller bolt (as you often have to do with any type of puller, not just the Mini flywheel) is that there is no room to swing a hammer, and I have always done clutches etc in the car. But on reading more closely, I see that the engine is out, so that is feasible. Tighten, whack, tighten, whack..... It has to release eventually.

With the accent on 'eventually'! I had one which took 3 weeks to release earlier this year and, yes, I did do all the usual things. In the end I used 'thermic shock', plus a blooming great hammer, to release it. That's why I always use the proper flywheel locking tool for safety.

Wow! That must have been super-tight. Maybe someone overtorqued the bolt at some time?

The strange thing was that the bolt was not over-tight. It was just that the tapers were just really locked together. I expected there to be damage to the taper surfaces, but they were fine. It's just sometimes they really do stick on tight.

not wishing to sound like im being a twonk, but my brother had the c washer slip down and jam the flywheel, which is why im always cautious of having the crank at the right angle (i think the slot in the end has to be horizontal?)

i too had a flywheel that was super stuck a few weeks ago, having had 3 of us trying to get it off, one holding the engine, another jamming the flywheel, and myself on the bar trying to wind the puller on, i resorted to getting the blow torch on it.

having heated it up for twenty minutes, it didnt "ping" off as i expected it to, then our other colleague just popped it off on his own as soon as he put the socket back on the puller again! i think it was the heat, he claims its just that he is stronger than all 3 of us!
