Like I said previously there will always be those individiduals that for whatever reason may need power steering to allow them to be able to enjoy the classic mini. But in general, due to the steering not being particularly heavy, power steering really shouldn't be necessary for the average person, even at low speeds. Hence why I mentioned my 4'11 tall grandmother who was still driving a classic mini in her eighties. My grandfather also drove the same manual gearbox mini into his seventies, despite being a left leg amputee & stroke patient, who managed to operate the brakes and accelerator with hand controls, as well as the non power assisted steering!
The point is that with the introduction of power steering as standard in modern cars, it now has gone from being a "nice to have" luxury, to a "must have" necessity. Similarly air conditioning is now fitted to almost every model that it's now considered virtually inhumane to have to drive a car without it in the summer!! In the early 90's my workplace had a fleet of Transits, all without power steering and everyone drove them every day without incident. As the years passed, one by one they all got replaced with newer models that had power steering fitted as standard and by the mid to late nineties, only a handful of the older non power steering models were left. Suddenly those who had to drive them started reporting muscular shoulder injuries from the strain of having to drive without power steering, the very same people who had driven them with no problem at all 5 years earlier!!
I'm afraid that the many labour saving devices of the modern world have made everybody go soft and the need for power steering is just another example of that. Is there any wonder that obesity and heat disease are reaching epidemic proportions in the western world, when the average person now has to have power steering in a small car that only has light steering any way??
